The magical Edea looks like being Final Fantasy 8's major bad guy (girl), although you can never be sure... Like Final Fantasy 7's Sephiroth, you can be sure there's more to her than just wanting to rule the world.
Edea is the lady who was chosen out of all the females in the world to inherit a witch's magical power, as it is custom to do so. While it was also customary for witches to be feared and hated, Edea is hailed by the people, perhaps because of her charisma, or perhaps by using her powers to brainwash them.
