Yet More FF Remakes

August 5th, 2002 - Squaresoft is not exactly the fastest company in the world when it comes down to releasing games (especially in PAL reigons). All of a sudden, the boffins at Square HQ wanted a few more sacks of money. Instead of making a brand new game, Squaresoft talk about releasing Final Fantasy I and II for the PlayStation One.
The first two Final Fantasy games are historical. The first one started it all and proved quite a challenge... the second in the giant series invented the coffee drinking, cigarette smoking Cid, the cat-like Moogles and the ostrich creatures, the Chocobos!
Final Fantasy II was never released in America or Europe, it stayed in Japan, although some clever people did translate the game and stuck them on roms for download. FF II was not the only Final Fantasy not to have a translation though - Final Fantasy III never got a translation either.
It may seem good that Squaresoft will be translating Final Fantasy II but the price does not seem right for two games which were released just a few years after your birth. Plus Final Fantasy III is not on the package. The price is going to be 3800 yen, $33, which is about £20-25 at an educated guess. Expensive? Wait until you hear this... the games will be sold seperately. That means it will cost $66 for BOTH games. Why buy when you can get a NES and both games for less then a fiver? However, for 8800 yen ($78, £30?) you can pick up both games AND three "action figures". These will fetch a pretty penny on Collector's Lot.
Like the SNES remakes, these two will be given the FMV makeover. As you can see from these early screenshots, Squaresoft have given an artistic feel to this character and the dragon:

Both games are in development for the PSOne and will be out in Japan around Winter. There is no word on Final Fantasy III, or American and European releases for the first two games.
